I am Aleksandra Osowska, a Polish artist and the creator of OTOOKA — an evolving world of handbuilt ceramic beings, vessels and “stories”.
My artistic journey began with painting and image-making. Over time, I found my way into ceramics and became fascinated by its ability to give images and ideas a physical presence — to take something imagined and bring it into the space around us. I studied Ceramics Art and Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Since then, ceramics has become the main language through which I explore the inner and outer worlds that surround me.
My work draws from nature, mythology, psychology, different cultures and their ways of understanding the world, as well as from the mysterious landscapes of our inner lives. I create figures that often take the form of guardians, companions or creatures from an imagined mythology. I am interested in the space between the familiar and the unknown, and in the ways an object can hold something that cannot always be named — a memory, an intention, a feeling or a story.
Many of my sculptures contain small inner spaces — hollows, openings and shelters that suggest the hidden parts of ourselves. I often return to plants, animals and natural forms, allowing the boundaries between the human, the natural and the imagined to remain fluid.
Each piece is built entirely by hand, without moulds or casting. Traces of the making process remain part of the work, allowing each object to retain its own character and presence.
At the heart of my practice is the idea of a ceramic form as a body for an intention — something that can become more than an object: a companion, a talisman, a quiet presence.
Today, I am based in northern Portugal, surrounded by forests and a landscape that continues to shape the world of OTOOKA.
OTOOKA is an ongoing world. Each new piece is another small being entering it.
